Excerpt from unchained Melody S.K Munt

Ryan had showered while Meredith had been kissing Hunter good night and was now wearing black track pants with white stripes down the sides and no shirt as he stood in the centre of the room and sculled a bottle of water until it concaved with a crack. He threw the empty receptacle carelessly to the floor, looked up at Hunter and said: ‘Hey man. That only took forever. I’ve made your bed up though and there’s a fresh towel in the bathroom when you want it…’ He threw himself down on his own four poster bed and picked up a book: Don Quixote. Hunter knew that because he’d seen it on the table in the music room upstairs earlier. ‘I’m probably just gonna read until I pass out.’
Hunter said nothing in response, watching Ryan settle comfortably into the centre of his bed, his nose already buried in the book. Water was shining like blood on his damp hair in the light, giving him the impression of being someone’s master or vampire lord, not a seventeen year old kid with mummy and daddy issues. Hunter resented him for that- for being so flippant, so fucking cool in the face of everything all the time. For reading a book with a title Hunter wouldn’t attempt to pronounce out loud. No one talked shit about Ryan. Callie was a slut, and Hunter was a wannabe rock-star who should have been a boy scout instead; but Ryan Weaver was Ryan Weaver and had never, a day in his life, tried to be anyone else or had been expected to be.
Hunter leaned against the wall, crossed his arms and stared harder, waiting to see how long it would take for Ryan to feel a burning sensation between his eyes.
It took four seconds.
Ryan glanced at him, then turned back to the book. ‘Geez, how wasted are you? I’m not going to carry you to the shower, man.’ Hunter pressed his lips tightly, his scowl intensifying naturally in the face of that remark. Ryan sighed and put his book down on his chest, ‘Okay what? Did you drop acid or something?’
Hunter stared.
Ryan looked at him then, and after a few beats, a wearied look came over his face. ‘Fuck.’
Hunter raised an eyebrow.
Ryan sighed and sat up, tossing the book to the bedspread and resting his elbows on his knees, with his head in his hands. ‘She told you, didn’t she?’ Hunter tapped the side of his nose, afraid that if he opened his mouth now, nothing but the F-word come out. And he owed Ryan the chance to be heard out before he threw him into a few walls. ‘Look, I’m sorry.’ Ryan regarded him with an earnest expression, his drooping gait reminding Ryan of a scolded dog. ‘It wasn’t intentional. She was asleep, right there on the couch next to me, it was dark and raining, I was lonely, she was beautiful and smelled like fucking flowers…’ he exhaled. ‘But nothing happened.’
‘Because lightning struck?’ Hunter asked coldly.
‘Yeah.’ Ryan snorted. ‘I think the Gods were telling me to back off.’
‘Someone had to.’
Ryan’s eyes flashed, looking a bit like muted lightning themselves for a moment. But then he sighed, flopping back on the bed and bringing his hands to his face. ‘Look I know it was stupid okay?’ Gavin Rossdale’s husky voice making lyrical anguish to ‘Glycerine’ filled the room and suited to match both of their moods perfectly. ‘But I told you weeks ago that I was beginning to suffer in her company and what did you do?’ He sat up on his elbows and glared at him. ‘You pissed off. You left us alone almost every day for a month Hunter! It’s a bit late for you to lecture me for breaking the Three Musketeer code when you were off sticking your musket elsewhere!’
‘Okay, for starters, I haven’t stuck anybody with a musket.’ Hunter pushed off the wall, holding up a finger. ‘Secondly, I’m not just pissed off that you risked our friendship with Callie because you had a hard-on, but because you then asked her not to tell me about what happened. To keep a secret from me. How is that keeping us a trio, Ryan? Since when are secrets even a thing with us? What else haven’t you told me?’
‘Nothing!’ Ryan bounced to the balls of his feet, looking squarely at Hunter. ‘That’s it, okay? I almost kissed Cal. Almost. We were interrupted by thunder, and the way she answered that little Truth Or Dare round robin tonight tells me that she might have waved a red flag even if we hadn’t been- because you’re the one she’s imagined kissing anyway, not me!’
But Hunter held up his hand. ‘She was full of shit, Ry. I don’t know what her real answer was, but she basically told me that she made it up for the simple fact that I was the only one of the three options that wasn’t available and therefore, wouldn’t get any ideas.’
‘Oh bullshit. She told you that because she doesn’t want you to know how much she really likes you.’ Ryan turned away and kicked his rubbish can aggressively. ‘Everyone knows it Hunter. Why do you think Sacha asked you what she did? About why you haven’t kissed Cal? Everyone assumes that you two have hooked up because clearly, there’s something between you guys that has been excluding me for a while!’
‘She doesn’t want me.’ Hunter snapped, the words causing him actual anguish. ‘She had her chance but she-’
Ryan’s head whipped around. ‘What?! What chance? When?’ Hunter cringed. Everything inside him cringed just as everything inside Ryan began to straighten. His mate started laughing- actually laughing!
‘Oh no way- you’ve tried kissing her too?’ He loped towards Hunter with a half-amused, half-hateful grin on his face. ‘And I’m the one keeping secrets?!’ He poked Hunter in the centre of the chest. ‘When? Come on, Marks, fess up! I can see in your eyes that I’m fucking right!’
Hunter slapped his finger away. ‘I just told you man, and it happened two hours ago. What was I supposed to do? Run inside with Meredith’s hand in mine, curl up in your lap and sob because I tried to take Callie up on her offer and she actually ran away after literally pushing Meredith into my arms?’
Ryan’s brow smoothed out. ‘She did?’
Hunter nodded. ‘I was drunk. I only meant to go after her, to ask why she’d never mentioned the whole virginity thing to me-’
‘Because it excited you to hear it-’ Ryan pointed out.
‘Yeah well, fuck I’m not made of stone!’ Hunter stepped back, throwing his hands in the air. ‘Anyway I had her up against the wall, and she reacted like I had leprosy, told me that she’d exaggerated the wanting me thing, because she didn’t want you to think that she wanted you, or for Reece to think he had a shot in hell, period.’ He sagged back against the wall, feeling depleted in every cell. He shrugged. ‘And then she bailed.’
Ryan stared at him, his gaze shifting from one of Hunter’s eyes to the other quickly, as though searching for a tell that Hunter was now lying. But Hunter returned the suspicious look with a defeated look of his own, and held up his hands again.
‘She doesn’t want either of us, Ry. She’s our friend. And now, she’s this close to running to the hills, because we’re crossing lines all over the shop since she got boobs!’
Ryan turned away. ‘Fuck! This is bullshit!’ He bounced lightly on the balls of his bare feet. ‘And it’s all my fault, of course! Why did I have her over? I’ve known this was coming. I didn’t plan to do it, but I knew there was a chance I might!’
‘You did?’ Hunter asked, stiffening again. ‘Why? How often have you thought about it?’
‘How often?’ Ryan leaned over and pulled up the spiral, five-subject notebook he used to write lyrics in. Loose leaves of paper were stuffed between the attached pages and Ryan pulled them out, throwing them above his head like he was in a parade. ‘This often!’ Dozens and dozens of pages took flight and floated to the ground. He paused, peered in the dim light at the title of one, shook his head and threw it into the air above his head. ‘Sun-Kissed Snow White!’ He pulled out another fistful. ‘Fisted heart!’ He reached for another and once again, flung it behind him. ‘I want to be inside you Callie!’ He shot Hunter a foolish look. ‘Okay that one was never meant to be seen…and they all suck anyways!’
Hunter snorted. ‘Can I read it?’
‘Could you read, with a fist down your throat?’
Hunter laughed, and then Ryan chuckled.
‘I’m sorry.’ He turned to Hunter, his arms hanging limply at his sides. ‘I don’t want to be Callie’s boyfriend, well, at least I don’t think I do. And even if I did, I wouldn’t risk what we all have together by trying to keep her to myself.’
‘Well that’s a good thing,’ Hunter said. ‘Because I’d kill you before I let you take such a risk. Just like I expect you to snap my neck if I ever try anything like I tried tonight again.’
Ryan rubbed his temples with his hands. ‘Yeah well… how are we both going to make it to grad alive then, Hunter? Because I can’t even look at her without wanting to throw her down on the nearest surface. You’ve been off and so she sang with me and holy crap…’ He sank back down onto his bed. ‘Holy crap- that girl can sing me hard…. That husky thing…’
‘I know.’ Hunter was actually jealous that Callie had sung with Ryan. He sat down on Ryan’s desk. ‘She’s changed, hasn’t she? It’s not just the physical thing. She’s like… more alive or something.’
Ryan scratched behind his ear. ‘Yep. And whether she knows it or not, everything she’s doing is sexy; the clothes, the dancing-’
‘That thing with the tights!’ Hunter added.
Ryan groaned. ‘I almost stopped living.’
‘Okay so we can’t help but look,’ Hunter surmised, ‘but we just need to agree to keep our hands and lips to ourselves.’
‘By not drinking around her- ever again.’ Ryan agreed.
‘And not walking her anywhere or driving her anywhere alone.’
‘Which means you can’t miss any more practices and you need to stop being a shitty best friend in general so I’m not stuck with her by myself so much.’
‘Agreed.’ Hunter conceded. ‘But it also means, that we either need to get her a boyfriend, or get you a girlfriend as a distraction.’
Ryan screwed up his nose. ‘That seems like a dog thing to do.’
‘You wanna be a rock star?’ Hunter reminded him. ‘Well you better start treating girls like groupies and get some of that frustration out of your system before you break down our system completely.’

Review: Rock Chick Kristen Ashley

rock-chickThis novel made me realise that I’ve become a sexual deviant. Like that creepy guy who spends late-nights searching for the truly twisted porn because the vanilla stuff doesn’t work anymore.

I thought this series was gonna be erotic! Boy do I feel like a complete ass! Assumptions just aren’t a pretty thing are they? But I saw a book with sooo many Pinterest boards and reviews and a cult-like following- and I just assumed that this string of novels were of the cheap-thrill variety which is precisely why I haven’t read them until now because I’m over the fast-read smut for the time being. But I was very, very wrong. Kristen Ashley you sneaky little minx! The recipe for erotica is so there- especially the ‘I’ll huff and I’ll puff and I’ll pin your arms behind your head in the elevator’ sexual tension sense… and just when I was squirming on the edge of my seat- plot happens! We fade out! Bye-bye bedroom, hello coffee shop! Well I’ll be damned… the lady can write 😉 I loved Rock Chick. It was nothing like what I was expecting and awesome for that. Take the obsession with getting into the man’s pants out of most romances right now and you’re not left with much but the opposite is true for Kristin Ashley. The boy was NOT the focus of this book for me- I was too besotted with India! How refreshing! She is one VERY cool chick and I want to be her best friend 🙂 Well… okay maybe not because she’s as much of a drama-magnet as I am and we’d probably call forth the apocalypse together- but I’d like to be Facebook friends at least 😉 So although this is first and foremost, a romance, the true dirty, exposed and captivating draw to this novel is not between the sheets but EVERYWHERE else. Every character is a character. It reminds me of Twilight, because as every single character in Twilight is flushed out and quirky and loveable so too is the ‘chorus’ for Rock Chick. I loved all of the characters and she gives up so much detail; the clothes, the food, the senses, the coffee… Rock Chick wasn’t just on my Kindle but in 3D around me. I could feel the boots on my feet and scent the coffee in the air. It made me want to go shopping then out to dinner 🙂 And THAT is what stands out for me about this novel- world building, but in our world. Ordinary. typical- presented in an amazing way. Much like Anna in Fifty shades said : ‘Raising the ordinary to extraordinary.’ The plot was pretty cool. Probably dragged on a little bit longer than I would have liked but there was no point during which I got bored. Exasperated, sexually frustrated (please tell me some of her love scenes in her other books get a little more involved???? She’s so good at stoking the fire but I wanted to feel the BURN!), irritated yes- but never bored. It’s not like anything else I’ve read. And because I’ve been on a Tarryn Fisher spree lately I can’t help but compare- the two writers have a LOT in common when it comes down to honesty and attention to detail, although where Tarryn is poignant and dark, Kristin is comedic and light. I want to be where they meet in the middle! The sexual tension in this book is off the charts and our leading man is dreamy. I love the way he doesn’t play games though after awhile I sort of wanted to slap India for not putting down the Scrabble board and just getting on with it. Problem is- one of the other leading men was dreami-ER to me and my DNA- which has a predilection towards love triangles- wanted to play ‘Bad cop’ something fierce! [image error] So happy that I read this, but I needn’t have waited until I finished my own ‘Rock’ Romance ‘cos it’s really nothing like it. Rock Chick is about the lifestyle, whereas Unchained Melody is about the music. I would recommend this to very woman I know who enjoys the lighter side of romance, and a lot of action! Fun fun fun!! smut for the time being.

Review : Scarlet The Lunar Chronicles #2

13206760Stick with it… it gets awesome

It took me a long time to finish this book. I can’t lie- the first 3/4 of it were really difficult to get into. I can’t say it’s all because of the plot because I have been flat-out busy but I devoured the first so quickly that I was hoping to feel the same about the second instalment.

As a writer I know that I have a habit of focusing on establish plot rather than just hitting people over the head with no-stop excitement from the green flag so I totally get why the first part of this book is paced the way it is and I can sense that the last book is going to be absolutely thrilling. And it’s not like one big non-event or anything like that it just swerves off from Cinder’s story to establish Scarlet’s and so my impatience too read about Kai etc was a hinderance.

I loved the characters in this. Wolf, Thorne, Scarlet- they’re all very cool. Thorne especially. And there are some lovely butterfly-inducing moments and I really love reading Kai’s division between what he feels for Cinder and what the kingdom assumes about her. And towards the end it’s just action action action! Which I love! She writes action the way I love to read it so double thumbs-up there! And the very VERY best part of this book (for me) was a plot twist which i did NOT see coming and I can sniff out a plot twist like Jacob can sniff out Bella’s panties so I applaud Miss Meyer for that!

That was actually the turning point in the book for me- it made me sit up and go : ‘Yes!’ even though it wasn’t actually a good thing for the character at the time I just love being surprised!

I really wish this was on audio so my hubby could read it because he would love it!So far the Lunar Chronicles are the perfect mix of tradition and creativity. Cannot wait to read Cress!

Review of Mud vein, Tarryn Fisher

18246727A sub-terranean roller coaster that goes flat into darkness.

As a work or literature this book is a 7 star. As a reading experience, a 4.

If I could get inside the head of Senna, I’d rate this 5, no problems. But here’s the thing… I’m a former cheerleader and a musical theatre performer who writes about Mermaids and I can often be caught humming ‘Xanadu’ under my breath (Okay belting loudly) while rollerskating my fluffy white shitzu up the street. So I’m the opposite of Senna in every way. That’s not to say that I’m shallow or anything- I love a dark read- but I am a person on a quest for happiness and this book was a shadow without sunlight.

That being said, I devoured this story. I sank into it in the two-sitting-read kind of sense. I’m officially a Tarryn Fisher addict and every word she writes resonates hard and sharp BUT I enjoyed the Love Me With Lies story more for the hope and the optimism and the eventual HEA.

Mud Vein is deep, dark and desolate. I don’t think I smiled once while reading this. I didn’t smile, I didn’t laugh, I didn’t get worked up in Book-Boyfriend sort of way… but I didn’t cry either and this is where I detract the star. I sort of feel like this was written just to bum people out. As moving as it is, as thrilling- it’s like being on a sub-terranean roller coaster that goes flat into darkness and doesn’t emerge on the other side. It’s hard to feel the ‘low’ when there was never a high. Senna is an enigma to me- at no point in this book would I have done anything she did so I just couldn’t connect with her. And I don’t know if the sort of people who CAN connect with her ought to be reading this- it can’t be good for depression. It is just too bleak.

However I enjoyed this for what it was- a story about a woman with more bad luck than Edward Scissorhands on a jumping castle. I liked the whole premise and the survival parts. To me, the Doc was the protagonist and I am glad that he got somewhat of a happy ending but I don’t think I took anything away from this story except what I already knew- that really bad things can happen to really decent people and there are some people in the world to whom optimism is a luxury they cannot afford. I was moved by this but it won’t be something I re-read.

Then again, I wouldn’t need to re-read it. The author writes too clearly and concisely for a single word to miss its mark. Mud Vein is about a woman’s journey through pain- someone struggling to find something to care about within a world which doesn’t seem to give a fig about her. Her journey has a lovely ending, but it is the inner-peace sort of wrap up rather than the circumstance kind.

I would recommend this to people looking for something out of the ordinary but not necessarily to fans of Tarryn’s other books.

‘No. If we’d left you alone, that would be bailing.’
Hunter saw Callie’s shadow shrug. ‘I’m glad you rang though. I feel asleep in my clothes- that would have felt gross in the morning.’
‘Why did you leave?’ He asked, waiting expectantly at the window for her to turn around and open her blinds. More often than not, they looked at each other across their yards when they spoke on the phone. But Callie didn’t come to her window. Instead, he saw one of her hands move to her hip. The lighting in her room was low and had a purplish glow, which meant that only the lavender butterfly string lights which dangled over her dresser and bookshelf were on. Her hand began to ruck up her dress, and Hunter inhaled sharply and looked down at the flickering candles beneath him. Jesus! She had to be half-asleep not to turn and check her window before taking her clothes off!
‘We walked Marnie home and then Ryan walked me back here. What time is it anyway?’
‘Almost midnight.’ Hunter dared another glance up at the window, and then immediately wished he hadn’t, because her silhouette was glorious. And the way she was wriggling her hips to get her panties down reminded him of the way she had danced earlier that night to the hip-hop tracks and suddenly, he felt parched. He knew he should look away but he also knew he’d pour hot wax over his hand before he shut his blinds on the spectacle that was his best friend unwittingly doing a strip-tease for him.
It’s not wrong. It’s not like I can actually see her skin or anything, he told himself, even as he moved to the window for a closer look and prayed that she’d accidentally open her blinds as much as he prayed that she wouldn’t.
‘Wow, twelve?’ Callie’s voice lowered. ‘How long were you making out for?’
Hunter swallowed. Damn her and that voice! ‘Um, a couple of hours I guess.’
Callie laughed a low, throaty sound. ‘How many bases did you get around?’
‘Just the first.’ He sighed. As much fun as kissing had been, Meredith had kept him in a state of hyper-erection-awareness and lust for far too long. ‘Again and again…’
Callie clucked her tongue. ‘Poor Hunter. You must be feeling very frustrated right now.’ Hunter watched her reach behind her with one hand, unclasping her bra. She caved in her shoulders and the flimsy, lacy garment slid down her arms tauntingly-slowly. She tossed it, and the shadows of her breasts jostled from the movement. The effect that movement had on Hunter was instantaneous. He actually groaned and reached down to adjust himself where his jeans had become too tight. ‘That bad huh?’ Callie teased.
‘Huh? What?’ Hunter realised that he’d actually made that sound out loud just as Callie’s silhouette turned his way. He dropped to the carpet of his room like he was being shot at, silently mouthing: ‘Shit! Shit! Shit!’ Over and over again. His heart was going to fracture the floorboards beneath the underlay if it pounded any harder!
‘Eek!’ A squeak sounded down Callie’s end of the line. ‘Oh! Oh you’re not at your window- thank goodness!’ She giggled and he heard her breath pant as she moved quickly, most likely out of sight. ‘I left my curtains open while I changed! That could have been shame!’ He heard a self-conscious giggle and then the swish of her curtains sliding across their tracks. ‘Are you still there? What was that thud?’
‘I took off my shoes- I’m lying in bed.’ Actually, I’m just lying. He thought, supporting his head which felt twice as heavy as usual with his lecherous thoughts.
